Why is a Rolls-Royce Really Something Special - The Bespoke Journey

When purchasing a new car, we normally start looking around for that little bit more, to make our ride a little special… a little different. When purchasing a new car, we normally start looking around for that little bit more, to make our ride a little special… a little different. An option provided here and there at the dealership, for added convenience such as a cost optional rear electrical sun shade or sunroof, or kit just for that personalised bit of identity.

What happens when you take this up a few levels… Or many… We had the opportunity for the ultimate personalisation experience, when Rolls-Royce invited Oneshift for a go at creating its own Rolls-Royce under their Bespoke Programme.

Victor Braun, a tall, young French man in his twenties introduced us to a world of fine leather, paint, exotic wood and carbon materials. Young he is, but Victor goes old school when sitting down to discuss your car with you… Just simply pen-to-paper, to build you your dream Bespoke Rolls-Royce.

Going through a few of the Bespoke projects Victor had his hand in, it became evident the amount of personalisation you could simply have on your car.

With a library of the finest selection of the softest leathers I have ever rubbed my face on (just a little bit of trivia, leather used for cars, comes from the hides of bulls and not cows, as cow hides almost always end up with stretchmarks), smoother than a baby’s bottom, different types of wooden panels for lining your dash, and doors, to lesser traditional materials like carbon fibre, we were certainly spoilt for choice.

To add to the uniqueness of the “Roller” brand, the pinstripe detailing or ‘Coachline’ as Rolls-Royce puts it, are done by hand on all their cars by just one man at the factory.

So the fun begins with the most basic of choices, the car model. So being the practical guys that we are, we picked a car which we saw was of value and comfort. The Rolls-Royce Ghost, with the extended wheelbase was the one to build our dream car from.

And since we were ‘working’ with a Bespoke programme, from a company with such a long tradition of building things special, we decided to throw them a mild curveball of working with our logo and company colours, and we were quite pleased with the (virtual) results…
