Tree crushes 2 cars at Bukit Brown Cemetery
“It happened very suddenly” were the words spoken by a 30 year old Chinese man, who only wanted to be known as Shawn, after his close brush with death. Their Mercedes E Class was parked near a tree, which collapsed onto the car during a large thunderstorm, crushing the car and trapping them in the wreckage. Luckily for them, a group of workers which happened to witness the incident, managed to saw part of the tree off, allowing the 2 friends stuck in the car to escape. The E class was not the only vehicle to be crushed by the tree when it toppled. A BMW parked nearby was crushed too. Fortunately, the owners of the BMW were not in the car when the incident occurred. They were visiting their ancesteral graves when their car was crushed.
The owner of the car, Mr Koh, a 35 year old laboratory supervisor, only knew that his ride had been damaged after the police contacted him at 4:30pm last Sunday, 45 minutes after the emergency call. He anticipated his ride to be covered in dents and scratches, but was shocked when it resembled ‘a pile of scrap metal’.
The incident happened at Sime Road, near Bukit Brown Cemetry. The recent strong winds and thunderstorms has triggered the tree to topple. This whopper of a tree was 7-8 storeys tall, and its collapse had blocked the entrance to the cemetery. The trunk was so heavy that the tow trucks were move the tree until personal from the National Parks Board arrived on scene to cut off a part of the trunk. No one was hurt in the incident.
