Since 1954, Porsche's Speedsters have been known for their open driving experience and striking dynamics, marked by a shortened windscreen and distinctive rear lid. However, there was a gap in the 911's history after the G-Series ended in 1988.
While Porsche offered Speedsters based on the Type 964 from 1989, the fourth generation 911 (Type 993) did not include a Speedster in its regular lineup, aside from two custom builds and a later factory restoration. To fill this gap, designer and Speedster collector Luca Trazzi created a one-off 911 Speedster through Porsche's Sonderwunsch program.
Speedster, redefined
Luca Trazzi began his custom project by researching its history and bringing a clear vision with detailed sketches. The Factory One-Off program encourages this collaborative process, where customers are deeply involved in developing their one-of-a-kind car, overseeing the project like a manager.
During the project, Luca Trazzi frequently visited Porsche, using his works ID to access the factory. He observed key processes, including his Speedster's cathodic dip-painting, typically reserved for new cars. The car's custom luminous yellow paint, named "Otto Yellow," was specially developed for him and was inspired by his dog, Otto.
Conical mirrors
The Speedster's rear lid and windscreen are signature elements, highlighted by a thin black frame. The car also features black, conical mirrors inspired by 1960s sports cars and modern Porsche four-point daytime running lights. Luca Trazzi completely redesigned the rear lid's bodywork line.
Sewn by hand
The interior is defined by black leather with yellow stitching, with embroidered Speedster logos on the headrests. The standout feature is the yellow and black checkered seat centres - this check pattern is also found on the front luggage compartment, car cover and touring bag. Carbon accents on the dashboard, centre console, seat backs and controls add a unique touch, while illuminated carbon door sills, in "Otto Yellow" with a custom logo, are a first for the 993-gen 911.
Air-cooled
It uses components from the 911 Carrera RS, including a 3.8-litre air-cooled six-cylinder engine producing 300PS. Only two such Speedsters exist to date: one made in 1995 for Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, with a green Carrera body and Tiptronic gearbox, and another built in 2001 for Jerry Seinfeld, based on a 1998 993 Cabriolet, featuring a silver Turbo-width body with 18-inch wheels.
Sonderwunsch touch
Porsche is reviving its Sonderwunsch program to create customised, one-off cars co-designed with customers. This service is available for all road-approved Porsche models, with work done by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur or Porsche Classic experts.
The process involves three stages: the customer proposes their idea to a Sonderwunsch consultant, who assesses its feasibility. If viable, a project meeting is held to finalise specifications. In the final stage, the car is built with close collaboration between design, engineering and production teams, incorporating manual craftsmanship and ongoing customer involvement.
