The New Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Is Stuffed With Tech

Mercedes-Benz will be revealing the new GLC Coupé at its VivoCity roadshow from Saturday, 30 September to Sunday, 8 October. This sporty member of the GLC SUV family adds a touch of elegance, dynamism and mild off road capability to the brand’s vehicle lineup.

What variants of GLC Coupe will the Singapore market receive?

The model range includes two variants: the GLC 300 4MATIC Coupé AMG Line and the GLC 300e 4MATIC Coupé AMG Line - the latter is a plug-in hybrid. The roadshow that starts this week will feature the GLC 300 4MATIC Coupé AMG Line along with other models like the A-Class Saloon, GLB, CLA Coupe and C-class.

What drivetrain options are there?

The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé will feature electrified drives from mild hybrid (GLC 300) to plug-in hybrid (GLC 300e) options.

Tell me more about its technical capabilities.

This new GLC Coupé is tuned to be versatile, offering comfort and agility on various terrains, both on and off-road. It comes with a standard sports suspension, and for increased maneuverability, there's an optional 4.5° rear axle steering available in the Technology package, which also includes AIRMATIC air suspension. Off-road capabilities are enhanced with features like 4MATIC all-wheel drive and electric off-road driving in plug-in models. The vehicle includes a 360° camera system with features like the off-road screen and "transparent bonnet" to enhance the driving experience.

What’s MBUX Augmented Reality?

MBUX Augmented Reality for navigation is available as standard - a front-facing camera captures the vehicle's surroundings, and the central display presents live images with added virtual objects and information, such as directional arrows and house numbers. This enhances navigation, especially in urban environments, making it more intuitive and convenient.

Does the GLC Coupe look sporty?

Well, it depends on how you define sportiness. But Merc definitely pulled some strings to beef up its style. Standard features include the AMG Line exterior with 20-inch light alloy wheels and a chrome package. Hybrid models feature mixed-profile rubbers of varying widths on the front and rear axles. The car's width is accentuated by the smooth flow from the headlights to the radiator grille, with the Mercedes-Benz pattern being a standard feature on the grille cover.

Tell me more about the mild hybrid-equipped GLC Coupe.

The mild-hybrid variant features a second-generation integrated starter-generator (ISG) and a 48-volt electrical system. The ISG in the mild hybrid versions assists the combustion engine at low speeds and works in tandem with a turbocharger. The 48-volt electrical system enables hybrid functions like coasting, boosting, and energy recovery, improving efficiency. The ISG ensures quick and smooth engine starts, with the start/stop function being almost imperceptible to the driver.

What about the PHEV variant?

The PHEV’s high-power-density hybrid drive with an internal rotor synchronous motor provides instant torque, offering full electric power up to 140 km/h. It uses an electromechanical brake booster to switch between hydraulic braking and recuperation, often achieving a peak recuperation power of 100 kW. Its high-voltage battery, developed in-house, has a 31.2 kWh capacity. With the optional 60 kW DC charger, a full recharge from empty takes approximately 30 minutes. It also comes equipped with an 11 kW three-phase AC charger as standard.
