The new BMW X1, BMW’s first Category A COE X-model has debuted in Singapore. It represents both the entry point into the brand for its X-line up and an attractive option as a premium compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).

Available in 2 trims – xLine and M Sport, the all new X1 sports an entirely re-worked exterior and interior.

The new X1’s dimensions has increased from its predecessor – it is now 44mm taller and 53mm wider than the outgoing model. These increased dimensions gives the new BMW X1 powerful proportions. Overall, its design deploys sharper angles and bolder lines, giving it a more aggressive and sportier look.

With new LED headlamps and a more upright and larger pair of (signature) kidney grilles up front, the BMW X1 has greater on-road presence. From the side, the new design employs a greater number of flat creases compared to the curved lines seen in the outgoing model. This accentuates the angular style throughout the car.

At the rear, its tailgate appears slightly more raked than before, and features all new (once again) angularly-styled LED headlamps which have been nicely sculpted to give a 3D effect.

Its interior has been completely redesigned for this new model. It features a variety of design elements such as the curved infotainment display panel, which now houses iDrive OS 8, as well as a new floating centre console. On the whole, its cabin feels more futuristic and modern, reminiscent of the BMW iX.

Being the first Cat A BMW X model, the X1 will be offered as a single engine variant, sporting a 1.5-litre 3 cylinder turbo-charged engine which drives its front wheels. It packs a healthy 122 bhp and 230 Nm of torque, which is available from low down the rev range at 1500 rpm onwards. The X1 receives a neutral banding in the Vehicle Emissions Schemes with no penalty.

Given the versatility, practicality and everyday-ease-of-use we have experienced from BMW’s more family-oriented models of late, it will be interesting to see whether more young families will swayed to join the BMW fraternity.

As the availability of premium branded choices begins to increase in the Category A COE-class, being a compact SAV built for the urban environment, the new BMW X1 makes for a compelling choice. Watch this space for the full review of the new BMW X1!
