The BMW i Vision Future Interaction Concept Car Turns Near Total Hands-Free Operation into Reality

First unveiled at CES 2016 in Las Vegas, you'd first notice that absent from the car are the switches and knobs which we are so used to. Instead, the user interface supports voice commands and hand gestures, with the support of high-resolution displays and touch-sensitive surfaces.

While automated parking and semi-autonomous driving in different forms, and varying levels of success are currently available, the BMW i Vision Concept Car features three diving modes, from “Pure Drive”, giving the driver full control of the car. “Assist” where the car is networked with the surrounding environment, while the best routes are calculated, the car intervenes only when in danger. The vehicle takes full control of the drive in “Auto Mode” without the need for any driver inputs.

Based on the Concept Spyder variant of BMW's successful i8, the i Vision Future Interaction Concept Car's central panorama display is the most striking interaction element. It extends from the centre console across the entire passenger side and appears to flow harmoniously out of the dashboard panel. The display height of eleven centimetres means that the dashboard panel is not higher than in actual i8 and it permits an optimum view to the front of the vehicle. The high-resolution panorama display is almost 40 centimetres wide while the screen diagonal is 21 inches, which extends almost over the entire passenger side of the car.

The display adjusts automatically, in response to the drive mode. Interaction, in future, for example, the system could switch automatically from pure audio to video transmission during phone conversations, if vehicles are driving in fully automated mode. Drivers and passengers also have the option of unrestricted access to Web content, mails or audio-visual offerings.
