The Angrier BMW M5 Competition Now Available in Singapore, Taking Crazy Just That Little Further

If you ever thought that BMW’s M5 was a little too mental, the ‘Competition’ package squeezes even more out of their stonking 4.4 litre V8. Power is now 625hp, 25 horses more than the standard M5, and the flexibility in its delivery of 750Nm, made available from 1,800 to 5,850rpms ensures maximum twist almost all the time. The ‘Competition’ hits 100km/h in 3.3 seconds, 0.1 quicker than the “vanilla 5”, and does 200km/h in 10.8 seconds, 0.3 seconds quicker.

The M Sport exhaust not only delivers optimum airflow, delivering quick turbocharger response; but the model-specific system which also features the same flap-controlled, twin-pipe exhaust system produces an extremely distinctive soundtrack with an extremely sporty tone, especially when the engine is revved hard. Various engine modes, which can be selected at the push of a button, include changes to the sound emitted by the exhaust system. In using the M Sound Control button, a once aurally satisfying soundtrack can be switched over to an understated drive sound easily. Visually, the black chrome embellishers of the tailpipe pairs nestled neatly into the left and right of the rear apron, distinguishes this system from the vanilla one found in the standard M5.

Engine mounts have also been uprated on the ‘Competition’ M5, with the mounts able to handle 900N/mm versus 580N/mm. This translates to an even more direct engine and transmission response to the drivetrain. Aside from that, the stiffer mounts also means greater on-road precision, with less shifting around of the engine and transmission.

The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission has been crafted for extremely dynamic performance, with incredibly quick shift times and swift, precise responses to every nudge of the accelerator ensure that the engine’s capabilities are instantly translated into storming on-road performance. Like the M5, there are three different drive modes to choose from, offering a choice of efficient, sporty or ultra-dynamic driving can be activated using the Drivelogic rocker switch on the gear selector. The 8-speed is also equipped with a transmission oil cooler to keep the transmission operating within safe temperatures, even if the car is pushed around the race track.

To cope with the added power, both the M5, and the Competition variant are equipped with BMW’s M xDrive system, which ensures optimum power transfer to the wheels, through the help of the transfer case’s electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, before the Active M Differential splits it again between the two rear wheels, depending on the driving scenario. Even with the xDrive system in-place, the car is still extremely rear-biased. The BMW M5 Competition also offers a choice of M Dynamic mode for controlled drifts and particularly playful handling, as well as three other modes with DSC deactivated that are geared towards track driving, and like the standard M5, also offers the drive in pure RWD mode, for those who “know what they are doing”.

The ‘Competition’ model also sits seven millimetres lower, with tweaks done to the suspension. Increased camber at the front axle enhances the car’s ability to absorb lateral forces through high-speed corners. In addition, the rear axle gets toe links with ball joints, instead of softer rubber mounts, intended to sharpen rear wheel guidance. Newly re-designed mounting for the anti-roll bar adds a 10 percent increment in stiffness to both front and rear axles.

Stopping power has also been improved by courtesy of low-weight M compound brakes, featuring six-piston fixed callipers and perforated, inner-vented brake discs at the front wheels and single-piston floating callipers with integrated parking brake at the rear. The all-new BMW M5 Competition includes exclusive 20-inch M light-alloy wheels sporting a Y-spoke design in a bi-colour finish. The wheels are shod with mixed-size tyres measuring 275/35 R 20 at the front and 285/35 R 20 at the rear.

Visually, the BMW M5 Competition can be distinguished by its door openers that are painted entirely in body colour. High-gloss black on its mirror bases and mirror triangles, plus the exterior mirror caps and the mesh of the signature M gills in the front flanks combines harmoniously with the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim for the side window surrounds and B-pillar trim. Both the rear spoiler and “M5” boot lid logo – which gains “Competition” lettering – are also finished in high-gloss black.
