Suzuki Jimny Back In Singapore After More Than 20 Years

The new Jimny channels the spirit of the original SJ10, and hints of the luxuriously appointed Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon. The new pint-sized ‘Suzi’ is priced at $114,100, inclusiveof COE. Champion Motors, the official Suzuki dealership here offers just one model, and with a $1,000 option of 2-tone paint (just the roof). With the current-day market filled with similarly-sized SUVs, the slab-sided Jimny definitely makes a statement. Circular styled headlamps have been retained, though LEDs are now the way to go. In keeping things close to the original car’s styling, Suzuki have also kept the windscreen flat, and quite upright. Even the rear quarters have been squared off. On the inside, robust plastics form the dash, complete with thick purpose-built grab bars. While with compact dimensions of 3,480mm (L), 1,645mm (W) and 1,725mm (H), the Jimny is able to seat four adults, albeit a slight squeeze for those at the rear. Cargo room too is rather modest 85 litres, seats at the rear however do fold down in 50:50 style, and you will get 830 litres.

For those who are keen Off-Road enthusiasts, the Jimny would make a great point of entry vehicle, with its ladder chassis and robust solid axle suspension, similar to those found in the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon and the Toyota Land Cruiser 70.

Under the hood, a four cylinder, longitudinally mounted and displacing 1.5 litres, delivering 100bhp and 130Nm of twist is mated to a four-speed automatic. The unit is equipped with selectable two-wheel and four-wheel drive high modes, and a low-range 4WD; the system which Suzuki dubs ‘AllGrip PRO’.

Wheels are a skinny 185/80 R15, and stopping power is provided by solid discs in-front and drums at the rear. Its ride height allows for a 37 degree angle of approach and 49 degree angle of departure.

In keeping passengers safe, technologies like Dual Sensor Brake Support (DSBS), which is its autonomous braking suite of equipment, alerts the driver if there are obstacles in the way, and also helps to increase the boost to the brakes, or in more serious scenarios, applies the brakes to prevent accidents. Passive systems, like its 6 airbags and impact-absorbing platform are also part of Suzuki’s TECT (Total Effective Control Technology).

Colour choices mimic some which were offered in the original car, Jungle Green, Silky Silver Metallic, Superior White, and the prettiest of all to us, is the one pictured in Kinetic Yellow.
