Skoda Flagship Sedan Superbly Refreshed

The Superb, Skoda’s flagship sedan gets a mid-life refresh. The Czech brand, which is known for its ‘Simply Clever’ mantra, and has been making waves in Singapore since its return in 2018, now offers four models in its showroom, two SUVs and two Sedans; and recently,  with its Volkswagen sister brand, has pushed for greater visibility through third party channels - (Volkswagen & Skoda).

Skoda has refined the Superb’s styling with a reworked radiator grille and restiled bumpers, lengthening the car by 8mm. Its long 2,841mm wheelbase, which results in the Superb’s superbly superb generous interior room (say this 5 times), also contributes to its confident posture on the road. At the rear, the sedan receives the brand’s new block lettering identity; with the new ‘ŠKODA’ lettering boldly spaced out on the boot lid. The Superb also now boasts dynamic indicator lights, which were first seen in the Volkswagen Group’s upmarket brand, Audi.

Safety, which takes a higher priority, now sees the Front Assist collision alert system fitted as standard across the range. The system which also now includes Predictive Pedestrian Protection, acoustically warns drivers of a potential collision, and even gently applies the brakes to slow the car down in the event of an emergency. With Predictive Pedestrian Protection, the Superb can even perform an emergency stop, if a pedestrian attempts to cross in-front of the car.

Side Assist, which consists of radar sensors mounted at the rear, helps drivers in monitoring their blind spots during lane changing maneuvers.

The Superb is also equipped with Park Assist with Manoeuvre Assist, which automates both parallel and vertical parking operations.

With the trickle of technology flowing through the Group’s product lines, the Superb also benefits from a digitised Virtual Cockpit, which allows drivers to switch between preferred displays within the instrument panel.

The Superb Ambition is equipped with a Bolero infotainment system, fronted by an 8” touchscreen, while the higher-spec Superb Laurin & Klement gets an upmarket Columbus system, which features a 9.2” touchscreen that also includes gesture control. The Laurin & Klement also benefits from a premium CANTON sound system, which houses 11 speakers and a subwoofer, located in the boot.

Both systems come with SmartLink technology for Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink™ as standard; this allows selected smartphone apps to be operated via the infotainment system’s display.

In addition to an upmarket sound system, the Superb Laurin & Klement edition benefits from with highly-praised road-levelling Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and a Panoramic sunroof.

Engine choices are limited to one, a new generation direct-injection 2.0 turbocharged engine, good for 190ps and 320Nm from between 1,500-4,180rpm. Drive is provided to the front wheels via a new 7-speed DSG transmission, one ratio more than the pre-facelift.

Prices for the Superb begin at $141,900 for the Ambition, while the premium Laurin & Klement model retails at $156,900 (prices inclusive of COE).
