Shell and Porsche Asia Pacific have announced the start of operations of a high-performance charging (HPC) station in Tangkak, Johor. HPC stations stretching all the way to Bangkok will eventually be ready by late 2022.

The 180 kilowatt (kW) direct-current (DC) chargers can charge, for example, a Porsche Taycan from zero to 80% battery capacity in around 30 minutes, which translates to 390km of range under optimal driving conditions. It is worth noting that this facility welcomes all brands of EV that supports a 180kW DC charger too, if drivers sign up for a Shell Recharge HPC Pay-Per-Use scheme.

A Google Map search revealed that the actual driving distance from Woodlands Checkpoint to Tangkak, Johor is 185km (2 hours and 12 minutes worth of driving time and a couple of road works at time of writing), so drivers with a fast charge-capable EV in Singapore can now have a reference point during road trips, once border restrictions ease.

For more adventurous drivers, they will benefit later this year from five other HPC stations in Malaysia strategically located along the North-South Highway. All six of Shell’s HPC facilities come with two charge points each, a decision we reckon will ease drivers’ inertia to invest in EVs. We’re eager for good news from Thailand’s currently closed borders too (only viable route to Thailand will be via the sandbox scheme by flight), as drivers can also look forward to fast charging options in Bangkok - imagine a fuss-free commute from Singapore to Bangkok without relying on a single drop of fuel..

This will be Southeast Asia’s first EV network based on the HPC infrastructure, and Shell’s first cross-country EV infrastructure in the region. Subscribers can look forward to significantly reduced charging times, and also book and pay via an integrated platform.
