Shanghai: New Volkswagen SUV Concept Makes Global Debut At Shanghai Show
Those of us who like a little style injected into our greenery will appreciate the Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe Concept seen above. Like the original seven-seat non-coupe version of the crossover first seen at the Detroit Auto Show, this five-seat machine from Shanghai features a high-tech drivetrain that consists of twin electric motors, one up front and one at the rear, that get juice from a 9.8-kWh lithium-ion battery.
The CrossBlue uses a 295-hp, 369-lb-ft V6 TSI engine and a six-speed DSG transmission. They work with a lithium-ion battery powering two electric motors making 54 hp and 114 hp. The net total output is 415 hp for the system, capable of a “theoretical” 720-mile range with 21 miles on electricity and the equivalent of 79 mpg on the European cycle. It also provides ample grunt for enthusiasts to the tune of a 62-mph sprint in 5.9 seconds climaxing with a 147-mph top speed.
The concept shows the scope of the Volkswagen MQB chassis (it will eventually be used in more than 40 Audis, VWs, Skodas and Seats)—it would likely underpin a production CrossBlue fitted with four- or six-cylinder engines.
The design is set off with a short A-pillar and pushed-back C-pillar to create a sleek side profile. The front end is punctuated with LED lights integrated into the grille, set off with polished aluminum and the VW emblem. The five-seater uses leather, wood, aluminum and chrome, all accented with ambient lighting. There is a 10.1-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch instrument display.
The CrossBlue can be driven in a variety of modes, including solely on electricity for city driving. EV mode can be activated up to 75 mph—at the push of a button.
