SG: Toll hikes unlikely to cause drop in economic activity

Higher causeway tolls are unlikely to have a great effect on local economic activity according to Teo Ser Luck, the Minister of State for Trade and Industry. Land transport makes up only 3% of business costs for manufacturers, and 1% for those in the service industry. However, some business, particularly the SMEs which sell goods and services across the causeway, may fill the pinch; each round trip can now cost $13.10, which is a 5 times increase as compared to pre-toll hikes. Mr. Teo also revealed that they have received feedback from companies that have found ways to manage the new charges, doing fewer trips through careful planning.Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
