SG: Jail for causing death by negligent driving
A group of 3 judges led by Chief Justice (CJ) Sundaresh Menon overthrew a long-time practise of fining those who have caused death by negligent driving. Drivers who commit the offense will now be sentenced to imprisionment instead. First person to be charged under this new practise is 27-year old Hue An Li. She drove sleep-deprived, which caused her to crash her car into a lorry carrying foreign workers in March 2013. The collision sent all 9 workers flying out of the truck, killing one. She pleaded guilty to causing death by a negligent act and was fined the maximum $10,000 and banned from driving for five years. The prosecution has appealed for her to have a 4 week jail sentence instead. Typically, such an offence will come with a 2 year sentence and/or a fine, although fines are sentenced more often than not. Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
