SG: Heavy vehicles to use temporary roads
Singapore Power has undertaken a $2 billion project to upgrade the power supply network, and have built two 200 metre temporary roads, which lead the heavy vehicles directly to the construction sites from the expressway, at the cost of $4 million. The roads have been built so the heavy vehicles could bypass schools and residential areas. This comes after the rise in fatalities from accidents involving heavy vehicles – in 2013, 44 died from collisions with them, a 40% increase from the 32 in 2012. One of the temporary roads, which opened in May and spans an extra lane of a stretch of the CTE, will allow the trucks to enter and exit the May Road construction site without utilising the cramp and narrow roads close to Hong Wen School and the residential neighbourhood around McNair Road, Towner Road and May Road. The first of the 2 roads were opened in January. Once again, an extra lane was built along a stretch of the expressway, this time the PIE, in the direction of Bendemeer in Geylang Bahru.
