SG: Further improvements planned for rail network

As part of the government’s plans to improve the rail network, not only will new lines be added, but existing lines will be upgraded as well. Two new lines, the Downtown Line (DTL) and the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), are currently under construction, and existing lines are receiving a refresh too; four stations will be added on the East-West Line, and one new station will be added on the North-South Line.  The LTA has ordered a whole new batch of trains as well, scheduled to be delivered and operational from 2015 onwards. To cope with the added capacity, several stations will be revamped. Currently, Clementi, Commonwealth and Queenstown stations are undergoing upgrading, which, when completed, should equip these stations with new station entrances, more fare gates and ticketing machines. A new pedestrian link bridge will be built to supplement the existing one and to improve accessibility. Some stations will undergo an even more radical makeover. Not dissimilar to the Jurong East Modification Project, Tanan Merah will also receive a new platform, to improve the frequency of trains heading to and from Changi Airport. The platform will be operational by 2024.Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
