SG: Former Romanian diplomat dies in jail hospital

Silviu Ionescu, a former Romanian diplomat which was involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Singapore in 2009, has passed away on Tuesday in a Bucharest jail hospital. At the time of the crash, he was Romania's charge d'affaires in Singapore. After his conviction, he was sentenced to a six year jail term by a Bucharest appeals court. Ionescu died of cardio-respiratory problems. He was found guilty of manslaughter for hitting three pedestrians in December 2009 while behind the wheel of a car belonging to the Romanian mission. One of the victims, a 30 year old Malaysian, died.Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
