SG: Drastic drop in traffic violations

The LTA has been installing new traffic cameras at multiple locations on a regular basis, and it seems as though they are enough of a deterrent to potential errant motorists, for road-related violations and deaths have dropped significantly, from 89 deaths in the first half of 2014, to just 78 in 2015. When it comes to traffic violations, from January to June of 2014, close to 1500 drivers were pulled over or caught for drink driving, nearly 250 more than the same period this year. The new red light cameras have also reduced the frequency of those who run the lights; when the new cameras were first installed, each unit caught an average of 115 monthly in 2014, as compared to the 19 of last month. If statistics could be trusted, the roads have indeed become safer. However, it is also worth noting that whilst the number of drivers who foul the law have decreased, the number of injuries as a result of accidents have gone up ever so slightly, from the 3,733 in 2014, to the 3,938 in the same period this year. The Traffic Police attributes the rise in the number of injuries to motorcyclists, and with good reason too; 2,078 of them have been hurt in crashes, and that figure forms a significant portion of the 3,938 in total.
