SG: Cabby jailed after pleading guilty of causing accident

A freak accident that occurred on the 19th of February last year has resulted in 2 deaths. Cabby Han Choo Bok, 38, was sentenced to 10 months in jail and disqualified from driving for eight years after pleading guilty to the crime. Since the maximum penalty for causing death by a rash act is a five-year jail term and a $10,000 fine, it may seem that Mr Han got away with the crime lightly. The collision happened just after midnight. It also ended up injuring the two passengers in his taxi. It all happened when the car of 35 year old Mr Seow Hong Xuan rear-ended the motorcycle of 41 year old Malaysian Tan Kin Heng. They were both travelling along the AYE when the accident occurred. The accident sent Tan flying, while his motorcycle skidded.

Seow immediately stopped his car on the centre lane, switched on the hazard lights and got out to provide assistance. That was when Cabby Han’s Taxi ploughed into the back of the stationary car. The estimated speed of the impact was between 101km/h to 107km/h, over 10 km/h over the speed limit. Although Han slammed on the anchors, it was insufficient to slow the taxi down fast enough. The impact sent both vehicles spinning forward, killing Seow and running over Tan. Both Seow and Tan died on the spot due to multiple injuries. Seow’s car only stopped when it crashed into the rear of a passing lorry.
