SG: Average speeds highest in a decade

Average speeds on expressways in Singapore have gone up, and figures gathered last year show that they are at a 10-year high. The average speed in 2014 was 64.1 km/h, a 2.5km/h increase from 2013, which probably suggests an increase in traffic flow. Just for reference, from 2005 to 2013, the average peak hour speed can range from 61.2km/h to 63.6km/h. The improved speeds can be attributed to altering several major roads to improve their flow. The works include the widen of a 5.8km stretch of the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) between Adam Road and Clementi Avenue 6, which has alleviated bottlenecking problems at several exits. The widening of the CTE helped as well. With the effective use of the ERP and construction of new roads, the peak hour average speeds on arterial roads and the CBD has been kept at 29km/h for 2 straight years, which is the highest speed since 2005.
