Power comes from a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine, whereas the previous Renaultsport Clio had a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre unit.
Power output for the new model is unchanged at 197bhp but torque is up from 215Nm to 240Nm.

At 1204kg the new car is 36kg lighter; performance is improved, with a 0-62mph time cut from 6.9 to 6.7sec.

A new dual six-speed dual clutch transmission comes as standard. It's linked to steering column-mounted paddle shifters and includes a "multi-change down" function that allows the driver to change down several gears at once when braking, by keeping the paddle depressed.

Another new feature is "RS Drive", a system that gives the choice of three settings – Normal, Sport and Race – for the engine, accelerator pedal response, steering and stability control.

There's also "RS Diff" – an electronically controlled system that monitors the difference in rotational speed between the front and rear wheels, and which gently applies braking pressure to a spinning front wheel, without reducing engine torque. Renault says this system intervenes before the stability control system, and is barely noticeable by the driver.

As with all Renaultsport models there's a choice of a standard or Cup chassis. The Cup model's suspension is 3mm lower and 15 per cent stiffer, and it also gets a quicker steering rack.
The suspension system on both versions includes a new hydraulic compression control feature, where a secondary damper within the main damper's body is designed to provide better bump absorption and more progressive handling.

The Renaultsport model - like all new Clios - will be available a five-door model only. Cosmetic changes over lesser Clios include bespoke bumpers and side sills, and twin exhaust tailpipes. Five exterior colours will be available; the standard 17in alloy wheels can be upgraded to 18in examples with either a gloss black or anthracite finish.
