One of the best selling BMW models in Singapore, BMW’s smallest SUV - or Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) in BMW speak - is now available in its most updated form after a Life Cycle Impulse (LCI, or facelift in layman terms).

The car is mechanically identical to the pre-LCI model, with the 1,499cc inline-3 cylinder offered in the X1 sDrive 18i and the 1,998cc inline-4 cylinder in the X1 sDrive 20i. Three variants are available, the X1 sDrive 18i, the X1 sDrive 18i xLine and the X1 sDrive 20i M Sport.

Due to the strict emissions regulations in Singapore, the 3 cylinder engine falls under the C1 VES band attracting a $10,000 surcharge. Curiously, the larger 4 cylinder engine was tested to be cleaner and falls under the B band, enjoying no surcharge. At press time, the price difference between the X1 sDrive 18i xLine and the X1 sDrive 20i M Sport is only $1,000 so it is clear which variant one should choose.

Cosmetically, the X1 LCI introduced wider and linked front kidney grilles, hexagonal daytime running headlights, larger front aprons, updated tail lights and bigger 90mm tailpipes. Interior wise, there is now a bigger 8.8” touch screen display. Otherwise, it retains the interior architecture of the last generation 1-Series.

Oneshift got the chance to try the X1 sDrive 18i xLine during the media preview of the facelifted car. Having tried an early BMW X1 before with the 6-speed torque converter gearbox, the newer car equipped with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission seemed to be more relaxed in the way it went about its business. The engine remains as peppy as ever, delivering its 3 pot thrum with noticeable character. The car handled exactly as I remembered it, eager but also with a firm ride even on the xLine model.

At press time, the prices of the X1 sDrive 18i, the X1 sDrive 18i xLine and the X1 sDrive 20i M Sport are $171,888, $181,888 and $182,888 respectively, including COE.
