Porsche’s New Formula E Racer Is A 862kg Lightning Bolt
GEN3 Evo generation of the Porsche 99X Electric will be used for the next 2 Formula E seasons.
Porsche has revealed its new Formula E car, the Porsche 99X Electric, which will compete in the next two seasons. The car follows the updated GEN3 Evo regulations, with key improvements in Porsche's in-house design. Notable technical advancements include front-wheel drive activation, enhanced grip tires, and a revamped front wing.
World Champion Pascal Wehrlein and António Félix da Costa will remain as drivers for the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, while Jake Dennis and new Porsche works driver Nico Müller will race for the Andretti Formula E team.
Working within strict rules
Under the GEN3 Evo regulations, energy limits force teams to optimise car efficiency. Manufacturers were allowed to modify certain components for this generation. Porsche's Weissach development team used this opportunity to improve the car's drive system based on learnings from the last two seasons. The updated components are homologated for two seasons. The next car generation, GEN4, is scheduled for introduction in Season 13 (2026/2027).
“Temporary” all-wheel drive
Key innovations in the GEN3 Evo cars include standardised hardware for all teams and manufacturers. A notable change is the ability to engage front-wheel drive during qualifying duels, race starts, and Attack Mode, giving cars temporary all-wheel drive. This boosts the Porsche 99X Electric’s acceleration to 100 km/h in about two seconds. Efficiently managing front-wheel drive activation is a major technical challenge, with the knowledge gained expected to benefit Porsche’s road cars.
Tougher front wing
This model is identified by its redesigned front wing, which improves stability and durability during contact. Additional modifications were made to the bodywork behind the roll bar and in front of the rear wheels.
Paint colours from Taycan Turbo GT
Purple Sky Metallic and Shade Green Metallic replaces the traditional black, white and red. These colours were first showcased on the Taycan Turbo GT, Porsche’s most powerful production car. The change reflects the technology transfer from motorsport to road cars and symbolises Porsche’s commitment to electrification and innovation, aiming to visually represent the brand's pioneering spirit in Formula E.
Porsche’s involvement in Formula E
In the 2024/2025 season, Porsche will compete in its sixth Formula E season with both the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team and the Andretti Formula E customer team, using the Porsche 99X Electric. The racing car was developed at Porsche's carbon-neutral Weissach facility. Porsche's participation underscores its commitment to leading in electrification, sustainability and tech among traditional automakers, while also providing insights for its electric production sports cars.
