Porsche and Star Wars Join Forces. All-Electric Taycan Revealed
Porsche launched its all-electric Taycan to much fanfare, and Star Wars fans at The Float recently. The German manufacturer teamed up with Lucasfilm to design a fantasy starship in support of the upcoming Star Wars film, the final episode of the Skywalker saga. Under a spectacular flying drone display, the Taycan, Porsche’s first all-electric sports car was unveiled, marking a new chapter for Porsche. Electromobility, which will be a big part of Porsche’s new direction, will mean that the German brand will field more high performance EVs throughout its future range of cars.
The top-of-the-line Taycan, the Turbo S, is capable of generating up to 761hp in overboost mode, in combination with Launch Control, and clocks 100km/h in an astounding 2.8 seconds. The (slightly) milder Turbo model does 680hp, and hits home at 100km/h in 3.2 seconds, which is still massively quick.
With the ability to travel up to 412km and 450km respectively on a single charge, the Taycan proves to be a capable family sports car.
Being the first production vehicle with a system voltage of 800v, instead of the industry norm of 400v, the new Porsche Taycan can quick-charge, utilising a direct current (DC) charger, linked to a high-power charging network, providing drivers with added range of up to 100km per 5 approximate minute charge. Ideal when loading up on juice while at rest stops on longer journeys. Charging the 93.4kWh battery to 80% takes just 22.5 minutes.
Drive to the wheels are provided by two electric motors, one powering the front and another to the rear. A two-speed transmission, fitted to the rear axle, allows the Taycan to accelerate off the line quickly on the first ratio, while the second gear’s taller ratio is engineered for cruising, helping to reduce consumption.
Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche at Porsche AG, who was present at the event, shared the design philosophy behind the vehicle. “Designing the Taycan was one of the most exciting tasks, because the only certainty was that it had to be recognisable as a Porsche at first glance. And by pursuing the strategy of making it the sportiest in the segment, we have defined a new architecture for purely electric vehicles. Just like what the 911 has achieved, my vision is that the Taycan will become an icon of this new era, a synonym for a purely electric sports car,” he said.
