There are 662 customer vehicles in Singapore that are fitted with the EA189 diesel engine and have software that recognises the driving curve of the official type test, regardless of whether the vehicle is on a test bench or on the road, enabling the engine control system to optimise NOx emission levels during the test cycle. This comprises 441 passenger cars and 221 commercial vehicles.

Customer-friendly solutions were developed for these vehicles, and the technical measures were fully approved by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) in Germany. After consultation with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and National Environment Agency (NEA), Volkswagen has been implementing the
necessary software update for the first batch of customer vehicles with the EA189 2.0-litre diesel engines in Singapore. These involved the Caddy, Caddy Maxi and Tiguan.

For the 1.6-litre EA189 engine, a ‘flow rectifier’ in the intake duct is fitted, in addition to a software update. The expected labour time for this procedure is under 60 minutes. Volkswagen Singapore will contact the
affected customers in phases. Customers will then be able to make an appointment to have their vehicles modified at no cost to them.

Since December 2016, the Volkswagen Group has received all necessary official approvals within the remit of the KBA at the end of December 2016 for the modification of diesel vehicles with type EA189 engines and EU5 type approval. Globally, Volkswagen has already successfully modified over 3.6 million vehicles. This process is expected to continue to the end of 2017.

It was the aim of Volkswagen that the technical measures do not result in a change to the fuel economy, performance, CO2 or noise emissions of the vehicles. The KBA confirmed that this objective has been fully achieved .

Note: The affected vehicles are technically safe and roadworthy. Between now and their modification, they can continue to be used on the road without any restrictions.
