New MINI Electric Launched In Singapore. Prices Begin at $163,888.

Singapore - 26 August 2020. MINI’s first production electric vehicle (EV) has been launched. The MINI Electric is built in the same Oxford factory as conventionally-powered MINIs, while its drive technology comes from the BMW Group competence centres for electromobility in Dingolfing and Landshut. The first-ever MINI Electric is based on the MINI 3 Door, with the very same dimensions. MINI had already factored in electrifying their current model range, hence the only measurable difference is in the vehicle’s height, which is increased by 18mm, to ensure enough ground clearance for the high-voltage battery installed in the vehicle floor. With an unladen kerb weight of 1,365 kilograms, the electric model is only some 150 kilograms heavier than the MINI Cooper S 3 Door with Steptronic transmission.

The MINI Electric sets itself apart from the rest of the model range with unique Energetic Yellow accents, found on its mirror caps, body trim and unique asymmetrical MINI Electric Power Spoke 17” light alloy wheels, with inspiration taken from British three-pin electrical sockets. Without the need for cooling up-front, the grill is closed off, and with it in ‘Cooper S’ trim, the MINI Electric retains its fancy faux bonnet air-scoop.

Premium features fitted as standard on the MINI Electric, include Park Distance Control in the front and rear, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Another useful feature included, is the MINI Head-Up Display, which displays relevant drive information, and helps you keep your eyes on the road. For Singapore, the MINI Electric is also the first in their range to receive the Driving Assistant package as standard. This camera-based system increases safety on the road by recognising and reporting speed limits.

A digital high-beam assistant, with Adaptive LED Matrix Headlights is also particularly useful when travelling at night in areas that are not well-lit. Other useful features include collision warning and pedestrian warning systems with city braking function, sits well with the MINI Electric which is an ideal car for city driving.

Replacing the conventional petrol engine, is an electric motor which delivers 184hp and 270Nm, the latter delivered from the get-go. Drive is transmitted to the front wheels via a single-stage transmission and an integrated differential.

Our short drive with the car reveals typical MINI 3-Door hatch handling traits, like how it lugs you into a bend… with go-kart-like nimbleness. While there is a minor increase in overall height, the MINI Electric has a centre of gravity that is at least 30 mm lower than in the MINI Cooper S 3 Door.

The MINI Electric is able to reach city speeds of 60km/h in just 3.9 seconds, and hits 100km/h in a brisk 7.3 seconds. Top speed is limited to 150km/h, which we would assume that most drivers will not be thinking of clocking.

Range And Charge Time

MINI claims that their new EV will be able to deliver a range of between 242 - 270km on a single charge.

Fast charging of up to 50kW DC, takes approximately 35 minutes for an 80% charge, while charging from the MINI Wallbox, which is 11kW AC takes about 2.5 hours to reach 80% and an additional hour for a 100% charge.

Installation services for the MINI ELECTRIC Wallbox is available for home charging, and a three-phase cable is included for use at public charging stations. An installation service is also offered as standard – the wallbox can be mounted in garages as well as in covered car ports.

The ChargeNow service, powered by Shell and Greenlots in Singapore, is available for maximum public charging convenience – charging stations in the ChargeNow network are displayed on the MINI ConnectedDrive in-vehicle navigation console, along with its real-time status, pricing information, and turn-by-turn directions. Payment of the electric current used is via the ChargeNow card or the relevant smartphone app.
