New Hyundai Tucson Hybrid SUV To Arrive Late 2021

The new Hyundai Tucson Hybrid is set to arrive this year, and the new car will sport the brand’s heavily touted “parametric dynamics”, first seen on their polarising Avante compact sedan. Their new compact SUV’s angular lines are a result of geometric algorithms produced by cutting-edge digital technology. The popular compact SUV has just become available, with the petrol variant already in circulation. The front end of the new Tucson, is characterised by Parametric Hidden Lights, which seem to be hidden when the lights are turned off, reveals dark, geometric patterns with no distinction between them and signature LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), the latter which are seamlessly integrated into the grille. The parametric theme is also carried onto the side of the SUV, producing large fender bulges, with angular wheel arches. At the rear, the bumper integrates parametric pattern details, coupled with a sporty garnish. The rear windshield, a smooth glass surface incorporates the brand’s emblem under the glass itself. The rear wiper is also fully hidden under the spoiler, a first for Hyundai.

The Tucson’s interior or ‘INTERSPACE’ as they call it, features sensuous forms inspired by waterfalls, twin silver garnish lines streaming from the centre fascia to the rear doors harmonise neatly layered premium surface materials in complementary neutral tones. An 8-inch touchscreen fills the middle of the dash, and Hyundai has dispensed with physical knobs and buttons this round. The new infotainment system supports both Android and Apple devices wirelessly, there is also a wireless charging pad to keep mobile devices juiced up. Like in the Avante, the Tucson also gets a 10.25-inch open digital cockpit that allows for some customisation of its display. The Tucson’s dashboard blends seamlessly with the doors, forming a wrap-around effect, while the gearshift lever is a shift-by-wire design, freeing up space within the cabin.

One of the new features is the Tucson’s Multi-Air Mode technology, consisting of a combination of direct and indirect air vents for air conditioning and heating to create a more pleasant indoor environment with more gentle air flow, designed for added passenger comfort. The three-zone climate control now caters to passengers in the rear seats in addition to occupants in the front of the vehicle. In addition, ventilated seats in the front and heated seats in the front and rear provide further comfort for the driver and passenger alike.

Adding to passenger comfort, overall space has increased, with an increased wheelbase by 85mm, and by providing rear passengers with 80mm of additional legroom. Cargo room has also increased, with 539 litres, and up to 1,960 litres with the rear seats folded.

Already available is a Smartstream 1.6 litre turbocharged direct-injection engine is the world’s first to feature Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) technology. According to Hyundai, the CVVD increases performance by 4% and fuel efficiency by 5%, and decreases emissions by 12%. With the added engine technology, the petrol variant of the Tucson produces 180PS and 265Nm. Drive to the front wheels is via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

A Hybrid variant will be here, utilising the same Smartstream 1.6 litre turbocharged engine, paired with a 44.2 kW electric motor, the latter which is powered by a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. The combined powertrain delivers 230PS and 350Nm, and gear changes are sorted out by a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Improved drive dynamics for the Tucson Hybrid is courtesy of its Electronic Controlled Suspension (ECS), which offers versatile driving characteristics, depending on the situation and driver preference. The ECS is able to control damping force on each individual wheel, helping to reduce roll, pitch and vertical motion; enhancing ride comfort and handling.

The regular petrol version relies on conventional dampers, though it uses new valve technology that offers more tuning flexibility for an improved ride. A MacPherson strut on the front and multi-link suspension on the rear ensure good levels of comfort and handling.

The Hyundai SmartSense safety suite is also featured in the new Tucson, this sees technologies like Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) with Junction Turning; an autonomous braking function, able to detect cars, pedestrians and cyclists, and now includes Junction Turning that expands the car’s range, helping with monitoring junctions when turning left. Safe Exit Warning (SEW) also new; alerts occupants if there is oncoming traffic when they attempt to step out of the vehicle.
