Mini celebrates 50th anniversary

Mini owners yesterday gathered to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the brand, and it was held at a grand scale.

More than 150 Minis – both old and new – gathered at the Changi Exhibition Centre to form the number “50”, which was a spectacle you rarely see here in Singapore. The formation began at 1.30pm, and finally at 3.30pm, the big "5-0" was formed.

With the assistance of Aetos traffic escorts, the Minis then paraded down the ECP, Beach Road, Orchard Road and finally arrived at Clarke Quay where a birthday bash awaited the Mini owners. At a specially set Mini corner, a Mark I and current generation Mini was exhibited, together with a timeline that describe the whole history of the Mini.

This was then followed by speeches from BMW Group Asia’s Managing Director, Mr. Johannes Seibert and Eurokars’ Group of Companies Executive Chairman, Mr. Karsono Kwee.

The event then went on with a Mini cake-cutting ceremony, and a photo auction that saw the formation photo being sold to a Mini enthusiast for $1,500. Proceeds go into the Straits Times’ Pocket Money Fund, a special fund set-up by the SPH to assist needy children.

The Mini 50th Birthday was jointly organized by Trans-Eurokars and BMW Group Asia.
