Question marks were raised when Mercedes-Benz Singapore’s Concept Store at Great World City was engulfed by white hoardings early this week. We have answers now although it's not entirely concrete where the next location will be situated, if at all. What we know for certain is that it has moved on from its Concept Store “as the brand continues to meet the growing need for mobility in a sustainable way”.

Launched in collaboration with its authorised dealer, Cycle and Carriage, and HYPEMAKER, the concept store was conceived as a platform for Mercedes-Benz to augment awareness around the climate issue, with the intent of spurring collective action across various segments of society towards greater environmental consciousness. The Concept Store was also a main retail point for Mercedes-EQ, the brand’s all-electric sub brand.

Some of the organisations that collaborated with the brand over the past year include Metamo Industries, Foreword Coffee Roasters, Mosscape, MINISHI Studios, Superstructure, and HYPEMAKER.

In the next phase of activity for Mercedes-Benz Singapore, materials from the concept store will be reused or repurposed by reXtore, a social enterprise committed to developing a circular design and implementation eco-system for the built environment, in Mercedes-Benz pop up activations throughout 2023 and beyond. Zen Teh, an environmental artist and educator will also be commissioning an art piece made out of the store’s deconstructed materials. These are in alignment to the store’s founding principles of eliminating and minimising waste where possible.

As one of the store’s final activities, Mercedes-Benz Singapore convened a panel of environmental advocates comprising Chris Morriss from reXtore, Artist Zen Teh, Stephanie Dickson, founder of Green is the New Black, Asia’s first conscious festival and media platform, and Emily Sim, Co-founder of Superstructure, a design to fabrication consultancy. Moderated by environment advocate and nutritionist, Charlotte Mei, the panel discussed their personal sustainability journeys, their own climate-motivated platforms that share the same spirit in creating and continuing conversations on the environment, and how society can progress as a whole towards greater awareness.
