Maserati Nettuno. F1 Tech In a V6 Built For The Road
Maserati knew that the time would come, where it should be on its own to develop its own engines. Sister company Ferrari, had left FCA the group in the beginning of 2016, meaning that the guys at the Trident needed to have an engine to call their own, for future Maserati models.
Maserati’s new engine will first find its way into the new MC20 super sportscar, which will be launched in September this year. Designed at the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena, the new Nettuno V6 features a pre-chamber combustion system, and utilises twin-spark plugs - technology derived from Formula 1.
The 3.0 90 degree V6 produces about 620hp, and 730Nm from between 3,000 - 5,500rpm, and spins freely to 8,000rpm. Helping with the delivery are a turbocharger located on each bank, the engine is also designed to sit lower in the engine bay, thanks to its dry sump arrangement.
Maserati's Chief Engineer, Matteo Valentini has gone on to mention that the Nettuno will go on to power the rest of the car’s in its range. While the new MC20 will be the first car in their lineup to receive the new engine, we are however unsure if existing cars like the Levante, Ghibli and Quattroporte will be future recipients.
