The Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam once again took the top spot in the Hydrogen category for Prototype cars, a position they have held since 2014. The UiTM Eco-Sprint clocked a 359km distance on just one cubic metre of hydrogen. A second Malaysian team, the Eco-Voyager from the University of Malaya, came in second with 256km/m3

The Linde Group employees from around the world came together to support the competition, supplying the hydrogen used by the teams, and providing technical assistance to participating school teams.

Sanjiv Lamba, Member of the Executive Board of Linde AG and Chief Operating Officer for Asia Pacific, said, "The Linde team in Singapore has demonstrated the tremendous potential of hydrogen in mobility applications. The passion of the Linde volunteers was matched and indeed exceeded by the enthusiasm of the participating student teams and we are encouraged by the level of interest from the teams, many of whom are considering making the leap to hydrogen power in future competitions. Linde remains deeply convinced that hydrogen is a safe, clean and efficient energy source for mobility in the future.

Linde delivered a notable demonstration of the tremendous potential for hydrogen power in mobility applications. The passion and enthusiasm of the participating student teams was very encouraging and we received a lot of interest from teams who are considering making the leap to hydrogen power in future competitions.”

One such team is the UST Eco-Tigers, from the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines, which is attracted to the renewable aspect of hydrogen energy. Said team manager, John Paulo Diongco, “Hydrogen is very abundant and it can be extracted from water. If we were to use that in the future, we would be saving a lot of resources.”

Off the track, Linde also took part in the festivities with several booths and exhibits to demonstrate both commercial and prototype hydrogen fuel cell devices at the event - the Hymera portable generator, and the Linde H2 pedal-electric bicycle.

Over the four-day event, thousands of participants visited Linde’s booth at the Live Work Play section of Make the Future Singapore, where they had the opportunity to learn more about hydrogen energy and how it plays a part in addressing our energy challenges. To demonstrate the safety and viability of hydrogen energy, Linde provided three Hymera portable generators to recharge more than 1,300 thirsty mobile phones.

Two HY!cycles, customised Linde H2 bikes propelled by hydrogen fuel cells, ferried nearly 700 guests and members of the public around the Linde bike trail. In total, the bikes propelled riders, passengers and a “trishaw”-like sidecar more than 65km, consuming just a fraction of the cost of conventional fuels in the process.

This is the seventh year that Linde has been a global partner of the Shell Eco-marathon, and will continue to champion hydrogen powered mobility in the Detroit and London legs of the marathon in the coming months.
