Capella Auto Pte Ltd, previously Chrysler Jeep Automotive of Singapore (CJAS) and the appointed distributor for the Jeep brand in Singapore, has launched the latest, fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee in Singapore. The full-size SUV might not be as familiar to us as those residing on the other side of the globe, but it's positioned to compete with European SUVs like the BMW X5 and Audi Q7.

Even if Jeeps are not commonplace in Singapore, we often generalise anything that looks like a Wrangler as “jeeps”, which goes to show its strength as an off-roading brand. Jeep is certainly tapping on this attribute to push the Grand Cherokee. With a price tag of S$372,888, it's S$40k lower than a XC90, and a sizable S$120 grand cheaper than the base-spec X5 and Q7, which goes to show that even though they are competitors in terms of size, Jeep is positioning it as a premium SUV that sits well under these usual suspects. It has to be mentioned though that unlike in its home market, the Grand Cherokee is not offered with a third row option in Singapore as yet - a potential dealbreaker for some given that most competitors offer three rows of seats.

It is powered by a 2-litre turbocharged engine good for 268 bhp and 400 Nm, with the engine tuned more for torque. Modest figures for one that weighs 2.1 tonnes, but it plays its cards on where it knows it will excel. An advanced traction management system enables drivers to choose between on and off-road settings, while ensuring optimum 4x4 performance. 20 inch rims wrapped in road-going tyres come as standard, which infers that Jeep foresees customers are likely keeping their vehicle strictly on tarmac. But when push comes to shove, if kids insist on that weekend trip off the beaten path, ground clearance is more than adequate - it’s 3mm more generous than a BMW X5 (217mm vs 214mm).

You’ll be greeted by a large dual-pane panoramic sunroof once seated. The interior front panel features slim air-condition vents, a re-aligned centre stack for greater driver accessibility and a 10-inch head-up display, 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system and 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster panel. All five seats offer a 2-tone black and beige interior with capri leather.

A full suite of Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS) comes as standard - Pedestrian/Cyclist Emergency Braking, Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Blind Spot and Cross Path Detection, Active Lane Management System, and Intersection Collision Assist System.

If you’ve always yearned for a Jeep that looks like it can handle rough and tough terrains, Jeep Singapore also offers four trim levels of the Wrangler, priced from S$324,888.
