Jaguar F-Type V8 Sound Preserved In British Library

Jaguar is gearing up for a transition to an all-electric luxury future by 2025. And to commemorate the end of an era, the British automaker made sure that it’s being “heard” by collaborating with the British Library to preserve the distinct sound of its F-Type V8. Recordings capture the unmistakable and soundtrack of the supercharged V8 engine. This initiative allows people to relish the auditory essence of Jaguar's final combustion-engine sports car for generations to come.

The sound recordings were produced within the controlled environment of the semi-anechoic chamber at the Gaydon Engineering Centre. This soundproof room is typically employed to fine-tune and assess the sound quality of Jaguar's vehicles. Here, the Ligurian satin black R 75 Coupé, representing the F-TYPE model, performed a series of gear shifts and acceleration sprints, forming the basis for the 30 and 47 second tracks.

These recordings begin with the engine's start-up, featuring the recognisable 'flare' as the revs rise, settling into a steady 600rpm idle, emanating the characteristic eight-cylinder warble. Throughout the recording, the F-TYPE's various vocal abilities are simulated, showcasing the range of its exhaust sounds.

As the F-TYPE accelerates, the exhaust system's valves open, altering the exhaust gas routing and releasing a roar distinctive to the F-Type driving experience. Listeners can revel in the crisp upshifts and downshifts facilitated by the 8-speed transmission. Additionally, the crackles and pops from the quad tailpipes during overrun further highlight the visceral and driver-focused nature of the F-Type. These sound recordings not only pay tribute to the sports car, but also serve as a captivating auditory experience for enthusiasts and automotive admirers worldwide.
