Jaguar E-Pace Gets New 1.5 litre And Mild Hybrid Tech

Jaguar’s compact-sized SUV gets a mid-life facelift. The E-PACE which was originally launched three years ago, gets a new 1.5 litre Ingenium turbocharged three cylinder engine, coupled with Mild Hybrid technology. The new power unit, while it is less powerful, produces 155g/km of CO2 emissions, and 14.9km/l - both are combined figures. The lower emissions means that the compact Jaguar is awarded a more welcome VES B rating (the previous 2.0 four-cylinder engine scored a VES C2, adding an additional $20k to the price of the car). The new engine is 33kg lighter than the previous 2.0, and Jaguar states that exhaust airflow has also been improved, delivering a more instantaneous response from the turbocharger. The new 1.5 litre delivers 160PS and 260Nm from between 1,600 to 4,000rpm, and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. For the refreshed E-PACE, Jaguar has also done away with AWD, and instead relies on a simpler FWD setup. Interestingly, with the Mild Hybrid (MHEV) setup, the E-PACE sits on a revised Premium Architecture, designed to accommodate the car’s electrical powertrain, and features new engine mounts which improves on the car’s throttle response.

While the E-Pace is sold only in the SE trim, a quick peek into the cabin reveals a heavily revised interior, featuring their very new Pivi Pro infotainment system, fronted by a 11.4” HD curved glass touchscreen. The new infotainment firmware boasts an improved user interface, where most common tasks are just two taps or less away. The infotainment system runs on its own power source, meaning that access is instantaneous, without the need to push the ‘Start’ button. Connectivity-wise, the Pivi Pro relies on twin LTE modems for improved downloading of media, and also their new Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) updates. New to the car is a 15W wireless charger at the base of the centre console, to help keep mobile devices juiced up, and behind this, a re-designed drive selector which features a quintessential British ‘cricket-ball’ stitch pattern.

On the outside, design changes include all-LED headlights being revised with ‘Double J’ Daytime Running Light (DRL) signature graphic… more ‘J letters’ seem to be better… Also new are the animated indicator lights. The side vents on front fenders of the E-PACE have also been re-designed, and now feature a ‘Leaper’ for better brand identification. At the rear, the tail lights feature Jaguar’s signature chicane graphic, the styling which was seen first on their first EV, the I-PACE.

The refreshed E-PACE retails for $189,999, and is available with just the SE trim.
