Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have formed a 3-year partnership to focus on hydrogen energy and advanced energy systems. The collaboration aims to develop alternative energy sources and further research to help Singapore's industries achieve carbon neutrality.

In addition, HMG, NTU, and A*STAR (Agency for Science, Technology and Research) will jointly establish a Corporate Lab Program. This initiative will drive collaborative research in key areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and 3D printing.

Hydrogen production tech

Singapore faces challenges in achieving carbon neutrality due to its limited natural resources and heavy reliance on natural gas, which generates 95% of its electricity. Hydrogen energy and advanced energy systems are expected to play a growing role in the country's carbon-neutral efforts.

A key focus will be exploring hydrogen production technologies and their adoption in Singapore. This includes Hyundai Motor Group’s innovative solutions, such as Plastic-to-Hydrogen (P2H) and Waste-to-Hydrogen (W2H) systems. The W2H system converts organic waste, like food and sewage sludge, into hydrogen, while P2H turns non-recyclable plastic into hydrogen fuel.

Tapping on NTU and A*STAR’s expertise

Hyundai Motor Group and NTU are developing an advanced energy system suited for urban environments like Singapore, with features such as modular design, easy installation and high safety.

On the same day, Hyundai, NTU and A*STAR signed an agreement to establish a tripartite research centre. The Corporate Lab Program will focus on cutting-edge research in areas like AI, robotics and 3D printing, aiming to drive innovation in manufacturing.
