Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) has revealed the winner of its first IONIQ 6 design competition, held in collaboration with LASALLE College of the Arts. The initiative aimed to provide LASALLE's Diploma in Design for Communication and Experiences students with practical industry experience. Participants created unique car decal designs for the Hyundai IONIQ 6, with five finalists receiving guidance from renowned Singaporean urban artist and illustrator Toby Tan (@tobyato).

First-year LASALLE student Ngo Quynh Phuong was named the winner among the top five finalists. Her prize includes an all-expenses-paid, four-day trip to Seoul to immerse herself in contemporary design philosophy.

Full support for emerging designers

The competition reflects Hyundai Motor Group's commitment to design innovation, emphasising aesthetics, structure and styling. Open to LASALLE’s Diploma in Design for Communication and Experiences students, it celebrates emerging talent while showcasing the award-winning IONIQ 6. This initiative empowers young designers to take on new creative challenges and pursue their ambitions.

Nurturing local communities

HMGICS partnered with Singaporean urban artist Toby Tan to mentor LASALLE students in the IONIQ 6 design competition. Known for his vibrant work, including designs for the IONIQ 5, Toby guided the finalists through creating car decal designs and a dynamic moving artwork. This collaboration highlights HMGICS's commitment to integrating art into real-world design and supporting local communities.

In the competition’s first round, students presented creative and brand-aligned decal concepts, judged for their artistic appeal and reflection of the IONIQ 6’s design philosophy. Finalists received one-on-one mentorship at HMGICS’s design studio and developed social media content to showcase their creative process.

Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang visit

Ngo Quynh Phuong and mentor Toby Tan explored Seoul, visiting design-focused locations like museums and Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang. They delved into the car manufacturing process and the design philosophy of motion. A highlight was meeting the IONIQ 6’s design team to gain insights into its exterior and interior concepts and receive feedback on Phuong’s work.

A public display of the styled IONIQ 6 in the winning car decal and collaborative design by Toby and Phuong will be held in Q1 2025.
