Hyundai And Toyota Are Keeping The Motorsports Flag Flying High
First-ever Hyundai N x TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Festival off to a flying start - fingers crossed, could this be a sign of a future road-going, motorsports-backed collaboration?
Hyundai Motor Company and Toyota Motor Corporation jointly hosted the first-ever "Hyundai N x TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Festival" at Yongin Speedway in Korea.
The sold-out festival showcased high-performance vehicles from both brands, with Hyundai N and TOYOTA GAZOO Racing - both World Rally Championship competitors - coming together to promote motorsport culture in South Korea.
Best of the breeds
Hyundai N thrilled fans with show runs of its high-performance models, including the i20 N Rally 1 Hybrid, two i20 N Rally 2 cars for customer motorsport and its mass-produced lineup like the IONIQ 5 N and Elantra N alongside a special appearance by the IONIQ 5 N Drift Spec. The driver lineup featured WRC frontrunner Thierry Neuville, Dani Sordo, Andreas Mikkelsen and 2022 World Touring Car Cup champion Mikel Azcona.
Toyota also demonstrated its high-performance cars with show runs of the GR Yaris Rally 1 Hybrid, GR Yaris Rally 2, GR Supra and GR86. The Toyota drivers included current WRC driver Takamoto Katsuta, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing team principal Jari-Matti Latvala, and nine-time Japanese Rally champion Norihiko Katsuta, Takamoto's father.
Driven by Morizo
The festival offered interactive programs, including a track day where 30 Hyundai N and 30 TOYOTA GR owners drove their high-performance cars on the Yongin Speedway. Attendees also experienced the "WRC Taxi," with rides in WRC race cars for rally-style excitement, and the "WRC Circuit Taxi," where top drivers, including ex-Toyota President "Morizo," took passengers on high-speed laps to demonstrate each brand's WRC vehicle performance.
Tuning culture is not dead!
There was a "Gymkhana Competition," where professional drivers from Hyundai N and TOYOTA GAZOO Racing teamed up with customers to race in Hyundai Avante N and Toyota GR86 cars. In the "Show & Shine" area, participants displayed their customised vehicles, celebrating the brands' tuning culture.
We’ve seen how Toyota swung the magic wand with Subaru - can they pull another rabbit from the hat with Hyundai?
