Get Swifty - The All-New Suzuki Swift

The much anticipated Suzuki Swift is here, and for the brand, it really is their most important for sale on our shores. For a while, Champion Motors, Singapore’s authorised Suzuki dealership had to make do with a one-model line-up. It’s not that the Vitara is bad a car, but just that the market is saturated with some very attractive compact SUV buys, and we dare say that the Vitara simply just doesn’t stand out enough.

But enough about that. The new Swift according to Champion Motors is in its third generation… that is if you discount the ones which were fielded in the late 80s and early 90s, which included the affordable pocket rocket GTi model, with its 1.3 litre engine, with twin-overhead cams and 16 valves; a car that made waves back in the Kallang carpark racing scene (yes for those who did not know, we did have the most bizarre race likely in the world).

But in a way, they are not wrong. The Swift is in its third generation, in this format, which was first introduced in 2004. A wide-enough hatch to fit two adults in-front comfortably, a short wheelbase for ease of drivability, and we loved that they had ensured that their GTi lived on with the Swift Sport.

For starters, Singapore gets a 1.0 turbocharged three-cylinder engine, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. So yes, there is the right-sizing game going on here, something we have become rather accustomed to, but the engine does produce a respectable 109bhp and a decent 160Nm of twist from as low as 1,700rpm, and delivers an impressive combined 17.5km/l. The “proper” automatic would definitely be a plus for those who do not take well to the sluggish response of a CVT transmission.

Suzuki had gotten the formula right with the transmission, and they seem to know that. Drivers will get paddle shifters, behind a multi-function steering wheel, and we also love how the air-conditioning controls integrate the temperature and blower directional settings within the knobs.

Sitting on some very pretty 16” polished alloy rims, the new car is certainly a looker, with its mellowed-down front end, and snazzy somewhat hidden door handles. The car is available in 6 different shades, though we would have loved that it could have a yellow option.
