Ignore the front kidney grilles for a moment, and you’d do a lot better at appreciating the new 7 for what it is: a true game-changer for the segment, if the preview we attended is anything to go by.

A total of three variants will be available in Singapore currently, the 735i Pure Excellence, the 735i M Sport Pro and the BMW i7 xDrive60. The 735i comes with an in-line six-cylinder engine paired with a mild hybrid system, developing 272 hp, 400 Nm of torque and goes from 0 – 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds.

The i7 on the other hand has a maximum output of 400 kW/544 hp and produces 745 Nm of torque, powering from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds yet having a range of up to 625 km. The car reportedly was designed with Asia in mind, which BMW says explains its extroverted exterior and new groundbreaking technology.

The range starts at $564,888 and interestingly, the range topper i7 xDrive60 is only $48,000 or 8.5% dearer than the entry-level car at $612,888. This is partially because there is no more 730i/Li on offer with a 4-cylinder petrol engine; BMW says emissions were high for this little engine pulling a flagship, and the brand is also streamlining its offering as well. Given the choices on offer, it seems to make sense to go for the i7 which is more future ready, if you have a charger at home.

But BMW had yet more good news to share. Akin to the BMW E65/66 7 Series era where owners in Singapore were given special perks and privileges, BMW also announced the BMW Excellence Club in conjunction with the launch of the new 7. Customers of the i7, X7 and 8 Series Gran Coupe will get exclusive access to cultural, gastronomy and international driving events, as well as free airport transfers and special care packages for their vehicles for the first three years.

In addition, BMW also announced that all new customers will be entitled to BMW Service Inclusive Plus and an extended warranty for 5 years (previously 3) or 200,000 km (previously 100,000 km), whichever comes first, for all BMW models. This means wear and tear items are also covered which wasn’t the case previously. Yes, that’s for everyone and not just 7 Series owners.

Alright, that’s a lot of information for you, but let’s get down to the coolest facts about the car:

Swarovski crystals are used for the headlights. Ooh, pretty.

There is a “coachline” if you go for the two-tone exterior. And instead of stars (hint), you get a Sky Lounge panoramic sunroof. Reminds one very much of Rolls-Royce…?

Its doors can be remotely open and closed. However, it will detect obstacles and stop accordingly.

Ambient lighting on the car is partially achieved with an illuminated Interaction Bar that adds a layer of engagement for drivers and passengers. It has a plethora of other functions, too.

You noticed there are no air vents? They’re cleverly integrated into the Interaction Bar. Would call for a good test on a hot day to really gauge their effectiveness, though.
