F1: Sirotkin tasted F1 car for the first time ahead of 2014 debut
18 year old Sergey Sirotkin is set to be the youngest debutant in F1. With the lack of testing, most young drivers get the first taste of F1 during the pre-season tests in Catalunya and Jerez. Sirotkin however, was given the opportunity to pilot Sauber’s competitive 2012 challenger, the C31, around the new Sochi circuit, which is scheduled to the the 1st Russian Grand Prix in modern times next October. The show run saw the Russian dash down a 700m stretch of tarmac that was already completed. Sirotkin felt it was something special, despite it only being a short run. He also added that Russia should be proud of the great circuit. It will be an uphill battle for Sirotkin though; he has to undergo extensive testing over the winter to gain the necessary FIA super license.
Sauber weren’t the only team to burn some rubber on the unfinished circuit. Russian-owned F1 team Marussia were there too. Their reserve driver, Rodolfo Gonzalez, had some run tearing up the tarmac, much to the delight of the thousands of spectators. The venue would host the 2014 Winter Olympics ahead of next year’s Grand Prix.
