F1: Hamilton wins in Australia

The Silver Arrows have dominated the season opening race down under! Hamilton drove his W06 in P1 pretty much from lights out to checkered flag, and his teammate was in P2 all that time as well. Whilst the rivals of the German automaker have hoped that the slight rule changes have reduced the not insignificant Mercedes advantage, it seems as though the new rules have served to further increase the pace of the Silver Arrows. They may still be close to 30 seconds behind the Mercedes, but the boys from Maranello have a lot to be feeling cheerful about, with the SF15-T showing a lot more pace and potential than its predecessor. Unfortunately, Raikkonen failed to finish due to a suspected wheel nut failure on the rear right tyre. Moving on to Williams. Massa came home behind the 2 Mercs and the lone Ferrari. The Williams of this year is just as fast as the car it replaced, and that is no bad thing. The team could have scored a lot more points if both drivers drove, but Bottas had to miss the race due to a back injury sustained in qualifying.

Nasr was a star too. On his first ever F1 race, he came home 5th for Sauber, the team’s first points since 2013. His teammate, Marcus Ericsson, finished in the points for the first time in his career too. The team may have started the weekend with a low, but they certainly have ended on a high as the 2015 Sauber is looking a lot more competitive than the car of last year.

The Red Bulls have struggled with software issues throughout the entire weekend, which must have made Ricciardo’s 6th place feel like a small victory for the team, considering his teammate, Danii Kvyat, failed to even start the race, as his gearbox failed even before he made it to the grid. The Red Bull Junior team, Toro Rosso, also struggled with reliability issues in the race, with Verstappen retiring from P6 with mechanical problems. Carlos Sainz finished P9 to score 2 points for the team.

Moving on to the last point scoring team, Force India. Hulkenburg finished in P7 without much incident, but the same cannot be said for Sergio Perez. After crashing with Button and then spinning early on, he fell right to the back of the pack, before slowly carving his way back up the field. He spent most of the race battling with an off-the-pace McLaren, but eventually managed to pull ahead of the cars from Woking.

Tough luck for McLaren Honda, as Magnusson failed to start the race due to an engine failure. Button managed to bring the car home, but way off the pace and in last place. As for the 2 Lotuses, Maldonado was taken out in a first corner collision, and Grosjean retired with mechanical problems. Both Manor cars failed to even take part in the Free Practice sessions, as they scramble to reassemble all the hardware and software that was disassembled following Marussia’s fall to the administrators. They are confident they will be back up and running in Malaysia.
