F1: Hamilton clinches 2014 title after Abu Dhabi thriller

Lewis Hamilton is the 2014 F1 World Champion! After a relatively unremarkable qualifying, he had to settle for P2 on the grid. His W05 proved better and more reliable than Rosberg’s, and he had an absolutely rapid start which saw him pull out a sizeable gap after just 1 corner. Further down the field, a few drivers have had the odd contact. Magnussen and Hulkenburg were busy racing each other, so much so that Magnussen had to leave the track to avoid a crash. The stewards awarded a 5 second stop-go penalty for Hulkenburg for the move. Magnussen then had a second collision with the oversteering Sauber of Sutil, which damaged his front suspension. By this point, the hard charging Red Bulls of Vettel and Ricciardo have already made up numerous places; starting from the pit lane, the Bulls were running 17th and 18th after the first lap. Hamilton continued to pull away from Rosberg, whilst Massa was closing down on the German as well. Eventually, Rosberg radioed in and reported a significant loss in power, which was caused by an MGU-K failure. 160 bhp down, he was quickly caught and overtaken by Massa, before his Williams teammate did exactly the same. As both Red Bulls started on the Primes, they were able to interfere with the race, with both Vettel and Ricciardo passing the strickened W05 of Rosberg.

Rosberg was not the only one suffering with mechanical issues. Maldonado’s Lotus caught fire spectacularly, putting a premature end to the race and to the dismal season for him and Lotus.

Hamilton boxed for a fresh set of boots for his final charge to the end of the race. Williams kept Massa out, hoping that the extended stint would mean he could be on the faster Option rubber till the end of the race. Massa eventually pitted for the Options, and left the pits 10 seconds behind Hamilton with 10 laps to go. They traded fastest laps continuously, and with just 3 laps left, Massa was 4 seconds behind. By now, Rosberg’s W05 has been severely crippled, with the team telling him to pull into the garage and retire. He refused, insisting he would like to finish the race.

Hamilton turned up the wick to ensure he stayed ahead, and stay ahead he did, crossing the line to finish in P1! Massa was close behind in second, and Bottas was third. With that stylish drive, Hamilton has clinched the 2014 F1 World Championship, and has joined an elite club of drivers who have won more than one title!
