Celebrating 110 Years, From Air Services, Automobile Production, Automobile Dealerships, to Bringing Singapore Her First Yellow Top Taxis. Wearnes Forges Ahead.
Wearnes, the region’s leading premium automotive distributor, celebrates 110 years of rich heritage and service excellence this year. Headquartered in Singapore, Wearnes was established in 1906 and has since expanded its operations to Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Hong Kong and Vietnam. Today, Wearnes works with a range of marques in the region, including Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Volkswagen, Infiniti, Renault, Jaguar, Land Rover, BMW, BMW Motorrad, Mini, Mazda, and Volvo. Wearnes’ business continues to thrive in Singapore, with its customer base growing by over 50 per cent in the last five years as a result of strong sales.
As the longest-running automotive distributor in Singapore, Wearnes has played a key role in evolving Singapore’s transport system over the past century. The company built wooden bodies onto the chassis of Singapore’s first buses, the “Mosquito Bus”, a small six-passenger motor bus commonly seen on Singapore roads in the 1920s and 1930s. The company also put the first “yellow top” taxis on Singapore’s roads in May 1933, and added double decker buses into the public transport system to serve the growing needs of Singapore’s population at that time. In 1937, Wearnes Air Service was established, enabling easier travel within Malaya, serving the Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and Penang travel route.
Commenting on this important milestone for the company, Wearnes CEO, Andre Roy, said, "Throughout our 110 years, our spirit of innovation keeps us a step ahead by anticipating our customers’ needs and offering services to drive future growth for the company. We are proud to be one of the pioneering brands in Singapore that has evolved with the nation’s progress. Through our continued investments, we reaffirm our commitment to deliver the best service in the industry to our customers.”
To accommodate the rapid customer base growth and enhance the overall vehicle ownership experience, Wearnes continues to invest in infrastructure by scaling up current facilities. In addition to constructing a dedicated delivery centre, Wearnes is also planning to double its current workshop capacity over the next two years, to provide stronger and swifter support to customers.
In its next phase of growth, Wearnes is also investing in new technologies – analytics that will better anticipate customer needs and help create a seamless vehicle ownership experience.
Adapting to change has been vital to the brand’s 110 years of development as Wearnes continues to evolve new paradigms in Singapore’s public and private transport sectors. It is closely monitoring industry developments such as the area of car sharing, the emergence of electric vehicles and ongoing trials in autonomous driving.
“We remain optimistic about the opportunities present in the region’s premium passenger car market, and continue to keep an eye on emerging trends that concern the transport and automotive sector. Wearnes remains committed to exploring new solutions and strengthening long-standing partnerships with international automotive brands that will help to address the evolving needs of the region and Singapore’s future economy.” concluded Mr. Roy.
