Following an intensive selection process, 10 candidates went through to the finals in Singapore, where a judging panel put them through a full day of practical tests and challenges to whittle the number down to three.

Arvind Ramu, a Singaporean currently studying at the National University of Singapore was selected as one of the Top 3 finalists – chosen from over 800 of the best young engineering talent from the Asia and Oceania region.

Top 3 finalists took on high pressured tasks with vast amounts of complex data which involves; an engineering exam, one-to-one interviews with the judges, and a dragster car build. These challenges were especially designed for the occasion by a team from Harvard University and by Renault Sport Formula One™ Team.

The panel of judges from INFINITI, Renault Sport Formula One™ Team and decision science experts from Harvard University proclaimed INFINITI names James Gourlie, a student from RMIT University, Melbourne, as the 2018 Asia & Oceania winner of its acclaimed INFINITI Engineering Academy.

Commenting on his win, Gourlie said, “I still can’t believe that I have won! This is the place to be - Formula 1 is the cream of the crop. Winning the INFINITI Engineering Academy and having this opportunity is a dream come true!”

His prize is a six-month work placement at Renault F1 in Enstone, and a further six months at Infiniti's Technical Centre Europe in Cranfield both in the United Kingdom. He will be provided with a competitive salary, an INFINITI company car, travel and accommodation for one year.

Cyril Abiteboul, Managing Director, Renault Sport Racing, also commented: “Attracting top new talent is crucial for success in Formula One™, so we want to make sure that together with INFINITI we select the best engineers to work for this program. Each one of these young engineers brings fresh perspectives and new ideas to the race team, which are vital.”

Carlos Sainz Jr. was pleased to meet-up with gifted young engineers getting an opportunity to fulfil their potential, he commented, “You just have to believe, and go for it.”

The Infiniti Engineering Academy (IEA) was launched in 2014 and the prize for the seven regional winners (from the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Middle East, China and Asia-Oceania) is a six-month placement at both Renault and Infiniti.
