BMW Unveils New 5 Series!

BMW’s latest unveiling is of their refreshed 5 series, or Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) in BMW speak. However, as refreshes go, this update is actually fairly significant.

Externally, the MY2021 5-er sports sleeker LED headlights, that can be optioned with BMW’s laserlight, or its new LED Matrix light system, that uses individual LED diodes to create an adaptive beam.

The new headlights are nicely set off by larger and wider kidney grilles, bringing the car more in line with other upcoming models in their portfolio. At the back, the rear bumper is shaplier, which helps exaggerate its new trapezoidal exhaust tailpipe finishers.

If these changes still aren’t enough for you, there’s an M-sport styling package. More pronounced scoops up front, and a diffuser in the back, significantly ups the visual ante if that’s your cup of tea.

A good mix of lightweight, 18 to 20 inch alloy wheels are available, with 20-inch BMW Individual Air Performance Wheels being made available as an option for the first time. These wheels have an innovative design, which minimises the wheels’ weight and air resistance.

To complete the exterior refresh, more colour options are available, and if you are the first 1,000 to put a deposit on the limited launch edition BMW 5 series M Sport Edition, you can even get your car finished in Donington Grey metallic paint finish, a colour usually reserved for the full fat M cars.

Inside, the once-optional 12.3 inch Control Display is now standard. It comes equipped with BMW’s Operating System 7, with plenty of new applications and connectivity options, as well as extended personalisation. Other niceties include an Intelligent Personal Assistant, smart navigation, as well as Android Auto smartphone integration.

Under the bonnet, the LCI 5 series will come with new 48V mild hybrid technology for all four- and six-cylinder engines, which replaces the starter with a 48V starter-generator, which produces an additional 11hp to increase efficiency and power. The turbo systems (which we hope to have here) have also been refreshed and optimised, with diesel ones now having two-stage turbocharging for reduced lag. All engines now meet the Euro 6d emissions standard.

Other mechanical additions include the expansion of their plug-in hybrid range. BMW now offers a plug-in variant of 5 models, and they come with BMW’s eDrive Zone function which automatically switches the cars into EV mode when entering pre-determined ‘green zones’.
