BMW's M2 Coupé Arrives In Singapore, Available In Both Auto And Manual Transmissions

The best-selling model in the M line-up makes its official debut in Singapore at a price of $380,000 before COE, or a smidgen under $500k including COE. That’s a meaningful $100k savings over the M4 Coupé, and the reason why we put both cars side-by-side is because the M2 Coupé is now essentially a slightly shrunken M4 Coupé.

Unlike the previous M2 Coupé which is based on a different platform, the new M2 Coupé sits on the exact same platform as the M4 Coupé. They also have the same S58 engine (albeit detuned in the M2 to 460 hp) and the same controversial ZF 8-speed auto transmission, although in the M2 Coupé you have the choice of a stick-shift which is a huge win for enthusiasts. Unlike the M4 Coupé, the M2 is available exclusively with RWD.

In a sense, it’s the purest formula of BMW M you can get at the moment, with BMW quipping that the M2 Coupé is the closest in dimensions to the revered E46 M3 Coupé. There is even an M Driver’s Package that will increase the top speed from 250 km/h to 285 km/h. If you want to go a step further, BMW Singapore is offering limited units of the BMW M2 Purist Edition that will come with M Carbon bucket seats, the 6-speed manual transmission on top of the M Driver’s Package.

Interestingly though, despite being RWD and having more compact dimensions, the M2 Coupé weighs exactly the same as the M4 Coupé at 1,775 kg. We would have to reserve our comments on how it feels behind the wheel until we drive the car proper.
