BMW 5 Series Gets More Power And Better Efficiency With Mild-Hybrid Tech

There are also more choices in how the new 5 Series is set-up, with a selection of M Sport suspension, Adaptive M suspension, and Adaptive M suspension Professional including active roll stabilisation can all be found on the options list. Like the 7 Series, the 5 Series features the latest version of the optional Integral Active Steering, which can come to the driver’s aid when manoeuvring by turning the rear wheels as required even at speeds under 3 km/h. Red callipers are now available as an alternative to the blue units as a visual differentiator for the M Sport brakes.

The facelifted 5 is characterised by a revised front end, which features a larger grille, which is wider and taller, and drops into the front apron. New L-shaped daytime running lights visually add more width to the front-end, and sync-up with the revised front bumper sculpting. New full-LED lamps, that include adaptive cornering function, BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam with matrix technology, and the High-beam Assistant are offered as standard. BMW Laserlight, which enhances vision, ideal for high-speed driving at night, is optional.

BMW’s current design language is also seen in The 5’s revised rear L-shaped tail lamps, which features integrated rear and brake lights as a single light fixture. All 5 Series models will now also come with decorative trapezoidal tailpipe finishers. Buyers who are keen on a more aggressive-looking car, can opt for the M Sport package, which adds new dynamically proportioned aerodynamic features to both the front and rear. Optional BMW Individual Air Performance Wheels debut with the revised car, and brings down the unsprung weight of the car, while reducing drag.

BMW is also doing a limited production M Sport Edition run of the 5 Series, with just 1,000 units available worldwide, with limited units reaching our shores. The specially prepared car will feature the M Sport package, model-specific Air Performance Wheels, a Donington Grey metallic paint finish and new M multifunction seats – previously exclusive to the BMW M5.

A large highlight of the facelifted car is the inclusion of BMW’s Operating System 7.0, that includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which is activated by saying “Hey BMW”. The system is fronted by either the BMW Live Cockpit Plus (standard on the new BMW 520i) and the BMW Live Cockpit Professional (standard on all other variants). Smartphone integration is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while smoother updates, through the Remote Software Upgrade feature, enables improved vehicle functions and additional digital services to be imported into the car over the air.

The new BMW 5 Series now boasts a larger suite of active driver safety and convenience features. The Parking Assistant’s range of functions has been extended with the addition of the new Reversing Assistant, which helps to reverse the car out of tight spots autonomously, up to a distance of 50m. Complementing the use of the 5’s external cameras and radar tracking, the Executive sedan is now fitted with a new Drive Recorder, which lets the driver record and store videos of the car’s surroundings. 3D visualisation, which was already available in the pre-facelifted model, now also displays the status of the driver assistance systems, and possible courses of action offered.

Other autonomous driving aids, like Lane Departure Warning, which is included with the standard Driving Assistant now helps drivers to return to their original lane, by means of steering assistance.

The new BMW Digital Key, which is compatible with the iPhone will enable owners to unlock the car with just a tap of the phone, and then placing it on the smartphone charging tray to enable the car to get started. This feature can be paired with up to five different Apple iPhones.

At press time, only the higher-spec 530i M Sport Edition pricing has been made available, going for $299,888.
