BMW 4 Series Coupe launched, And Breathing Through A Controversial New Grille

After months of teasers and leaks, BMW has finally unveiled the latest incarnation of a pedigreed lineage of premium midsize BMW sports cars, in the form of the latest BMW 4 series, scheduled to be made available from October 2020.

At launch, 5 variants will be on offer, with the M440i xDrive Coupé being the flagship. It will be propelled by a 374 hp six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, but other engine options, being a range of four-cylinder petrol engines as well as a four-cylinder diesel unit, are available. Further down the line, six cylinder diesels will be made available... though we will probably not see the diesel engines here.

Visually, the BMW 4 Series, with its controversial new grille I shall term 'Cratem Maximus', is best described as striking; and looks like they have taken a leaf from some of their historical cars, like the BMW 328.

Front fascia aside, the car actually looks svelte, and has an athletic outwards appearance. It definitely is differentiated from the 3 Series, with that striking front end, but also with its coupé proportions. As a result, the car has a lower centre of gravity.

Sticking to the outside, every 4 series will come with extremely slim LED headlights. Adaptive units with BMW Laserlight will be available as an optional extra.

Crack the door open and you’ll find a driver-focused cockpit, especially if you opt for the optional fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster. It is flanked by a 10.25-inch Control Display that is powered by BMW’s Operating System 7. It comes with plenty of features and smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A new sports leather steering wheel and sports seats are standard equipment. To shield you from extra road or wind noise, the car comes with an acoustic glass windscreen. A sunroof can be optioned should you choose to do so.

Under the bonnet, and back to the engine, you’ll find that all six-cylinder petrol and all diesel engines have been fitted with mild hybrid technology. The 48V starter-generator provides an extra 11hp of oomph, with diesels getting compound turbocharging for even more responsiveness. As standard, the powerplants will be mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive available as an option later down the road.

As is customary with most modern BMWs, M performance parts will be made available, and if you’re really keen on spirited driving, said parts can alter your driving experience. From various M Sport suspension options, to M Sport brakes and differentials, your 4 series can be optioned to better suit your driving style. Finally, 19-inch M light-alloy wheels can be optioned to complete the look.
