Beefy Goodness For The Entire Family - Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe Launched in Singapore
A true-blue sports car which you can take around the race track… after dropping the kids off. That is what they said as they pulled the covers off the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, and they couldn’t be more correct. But while the 4-Door may carry the GT badge, it actually shares a lot in common with the E-Class and CLS, utilising the same underpinnings. It is not a light car, with the more “basic” six-cylinder 53 4-MATIC already weighing in at 2,045kg. The base car utilises the all-new M256 six-cylinder straight engine, with gearshifts done by an AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-G transmission, which drives all four wheels. Like the CLS 53, the GT is a mild hybrid, which utilises an integrated EQ Boost starter-alternator which is sited between the engine and the transmission. The engine itself delivers 435hp and 520Nm from between 1,800 to 5,800rpm. The starter-alternator provides assistance of up to 22hp more power and 250Nm of additional torque. Maximum torque is rated at 530Nm, and is available from between 1,800 to 5,800rpm. The AMG GT 53 takes 4.5 seconds to hit 100km/h and is able to achieve a top speed of 285 km/h.
The GT 63 S utilises a hand-assembled 90 degree 4.0 litre V8, produced at AMG's engine manufacturing plant in Affalterbach. The proven V8 delivers 639hp with astronomical peak torque of 900Nm available from between 2,500 to 4,500rpm. The V8 keeps the two turbochargers between the cylinder banks for quicker response from exhaust gases. Its 3.2 second century sprint timing is supercar-rivalling, and maximum speed is a dizzying 315km/h. But performance is not the only focus, in “Comfort” mode, the V8 deactivates four of its cylinders (cylinders two, three, five and eight) from between 1,000 to 3,250 rpm for greater cruising and low load efficiency.
The AMG GT 63 S is also equipped with dynamic engine mounts as part of the standard AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package, the rigid mounts prevent the weight of the engine from shifting, which is crucial during dynamic driving conditions.
Both cars are equipped with fully variable all-wheel drive. The electro-mechanically controlled clutch of the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel- drive system connects the permanently driven rear axle variably to the front axle, and like all good all-wheel drive performance cars, operates traditionally with a rear-wheel bias.
The 63 S model also features Drift mode as standard, and is also available on other models as part of the optional AMG DYNAMIC Plus Package. The V8 also has a standard electronically controlled differential lock (available on the 6-cylinder with the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package) on the rear axle, which helps to suppress wheel slip on the inner wheel, further improving traction when exiting corners.
Rear axle steering is also standard for both cars, improving maneuverability; with the rear wheels turning in the opposite direction at speeds of up to 100km/h. At speeds above 100km/h, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front for added stability and smoothness, especially during lane changes.
The GT 4-Door uncompromisingly offers seating for five as standard. Boot volume of 456 litres is comparable to many executive sedans, and can be further expanded to 1,324 litres, by folding its 40:20:40 style rear seats. For an addition of S$13,400, you can opt for the four-seater configuration, which features a console between the seats, facilitating control of the infotainment and comfort settings.
The cockpit gets twin “snowboard” style 12.3” displays, one as the instrument panel, and the other as the infotainment display. A new centre console with a flatter touchpad is a welcome sight, flanked by individual car setting switches. AMG TRACK PACE is an additional function of the COMAND Online infotainment system and is part of the standard equipment for the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé. The system captures and analyses in detail over 80 vehicle-specific data as well as times on the racetrack. Driving data can be spotted out of the corner of the driver's eye without any need to look away from the track. Even the drift angle of the car is calculated and displayed.
The GT 53 is available inclusive of at S$556,888* and GT 63 at S$751,888*. (Prices stated are before options).
