Series production for Audi's newest family car, the Audi Q2 has already started at its main plant in Ingolstadt. First revealed at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the Q2 is Audi's 13th model series, and is primarily designed both for everyday commutes and recreational driving. This latest addition to the brand rounds off the low-end portion of the Q-family and enhances Audi's competitive position in the market.

Changes in logistics

Produced on the A3 line, the new Q2 passes through the same body shop, paint shop, and assembly as the Audi A3. This meant Audi had to make big changes both to their production processes and logistics planning. The manufacturer plans to increase production to 450 units a day. To do this, Audi is resorting to new, innovative measures to handle the increasingly complex production. For example, an automatic module store for the drivetrain is installed on the assembly line to increase the local storage capacity.

“The start of series production of a new model is always a great challenge and something special for a plant and its employees. We are proud to be building the Audi Q2 – the Q‑family entry model – here in Ingolstadt for the world market. I would like to thank the Audi team for the successful start of production,” said Albert Mayer, the plant director for Audi's Ingolstadt plant.

The Audi Q2 starts with six different engines: three TFSI and three TDI units delivering between 85 kW (116 hp) and 140 kW (190 hp). Orders can soon be placed for the new model from Ingolstadt.
