Audi A6 Avant e-tron Concept Revealed, Production Model Covers 700km of Range
What we have here is a concept of Audi’s A6 Avant e-tron, presented in a warm shade of gray (or Neptune Valley in Audi speak). We might be wondering if they will bear any resemblance to the production version, but during our online sneak preview last week where we were only allowed to survey exterior features, we were assured by Audi that they will look very similar to this concept, apart from the obvious addition of door handles when they enter mass production!
The Audi A6 Avant e-tron will cover up to 700km of range (under the WLTP standard), depending on the drive system and model variant. With its 800-volt system and a charging capacity of up to 270 kW, it can take in enough energy in 10 minutes at a fast-charging station to drive about 300km. Its two electric motors deliver 350 kW in total and 800 Nm of torque, and can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in less than four seconds.
Just like the Audi A6 e-tron concept exhibited last year, the A6 Avant concept sports an electric drive system based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform. A battery module between the axles will hold around 100 kWh of energy in the Avant. This also represents a new design concept with the same dimensions as the A6 Sportback e-tron. At 4.96m in length, for a more relatable comparison it is only very slightly longer than a non-Touring BMW 5 Series (4.94m).
The front features a large enclosed “Singleframe” grille, bordered at the bottom by deep air intakes for cooling the drivetrain, battery and brakes. The flat headlight bezels extend far into the sides of the laterally sweeping front end, underscoring the horizontally aligned architecture of the vehicle body.
The rear end of the concept car features a new generation of digital OLED elements that, as a continuous strip of lights, act like a display. They can also be used to create almost unlimited customisable variations of digital light signatures and dynamic lighting displays that can be adapted to the customer’s personal taste.
As expected, the Audi A6 Avant e-tron concept’s lines and proportions hint towards future Audi production models, but they are far from copy and paste from already-launched full electric models, like the e-tron Sportback and RS e-tron GT. With the Avant, Audi asserts that they had “worked out a new kind of car that has often been copied by the competition”. BMW, with their upcoming M3 Touring, might have a different opinion…
We could be expecting a couple more Audi BEVs in Avant-form, given that it plans to have more than 20 fully electric models in its portfolio by 2025. But we’ll also place our bets on ICE-equipped Avants still being featured alongside their electric counterparts in the near future, as Audi is fully aware that fuss free EV ownership is still highly dependent on each market’s infrastructure. If you’re itching for an A6 Avant today, you could be tempted by a pre-owned example enhanced by a mild hybrid.
